Het verhaal
In ‘Graceland the Concert’ laten The African Mamas het publiek het fantastische concert, waar Paul Simon de aanstichter en dirigent van was, herbeleven. Met hun prachtige stemmen, diepe emoties en ontembare vitaliteit creëren The African Mamas meer dan een prachtige show. Het wordt een onvergetelijke muzikale belevenis.
Het begon begin jaren 80 toen Paul Simon toevallig een cassettebandje in handen kreeg van ‘Gumboots’. De stuwende Soweto-sound van gitaren, bas, drums en accordeon herinnerde hem aan de opwindende beginjaren van de rock ’n roll. Niet lang daarna vertrekt Paul Simon naar Johannesburg om met de oorspronkelijke artiesten opnames te maken, met het fantastische album Graceland als het ultieme eindresultaat.
De sensatie over de (opwindende) mix van Amerikaanse en Zuid-Afrikaanse popmuziek ging hand in hand met de nodige politieke turbulentie. De anti-apartheidsbeweging was op zijn zachtst gezegd niet blij dat Paul Simon de culturele boycot van Zuid-Afrika doorbrak. Terwijl tal van grote sterren kritiekloos in Sun City, het decadente symbool van de apartheidspolitiek, op bleven treden, werd Paul Simon het mikpunt van kritiek. Iets dat hij zelf nooit heeft begrepen. “Maar waarom waren de muzikanten dan zo blij met mijn komst? We werkten samen, zonder aanzien van ras of kleur” zei hij daar destijds zelf over.
‘Graceland The Concert’ gaat voorbij aan alle kritiek en commentaar en is vooral een muzikale belevenis. Een sensatie die een groot publiek kennis heeft laten maken met de Soweto-sound en zo de geschiedenis herschreven heeft.

The African Mamas present ‘Graceland The Concert’, the famous concert - initiated and conducted by Paul Simon! With their beautiful voices, deep and heartfelt emotions and boundless energy, The African Mamas create a more than incredible show.
It started in the early 80s when Paul Simon accidentally got a tape of ‘Gumboots’. The driving force of the Soweto-sound of guitars, bass, drums and accordion reminded him of the thrilling early years of rock ’n’ roll. A little while later, Paul Simon went to Johannesburg to play and record with the original musicians resulting in the fantastic Graceland album.
Despite the political turbulence in South Africa, the sensation over the mix of American and South African pop music was enormous. The anti-apartheid movement was not happy that Paul Simon broke with the cultural boycott of South Africa. While lots of well-known artists still played at Sun City, the decadent symbol of the apartheid politics, Paul Simon was criticized. He didn’t understand it at all; “The artists were happy that I came to Johannesburg. We worked together, without mentioning race or color”. The Soweto-sound was introduced to the international audience and history was written.
Forget all critics and comments; ‘Graceland The Concert’ is above all a beautiful musical experience!
